Charles ("Chuck") Murray Hebble, Jr. died at the age of 93 at Kendal of Hanover, Hanover, NH on Monday, October 21, 2024.
Chuck was born April 2, 1931 to Charles M. and Edith E. Hebble in Cincinnati, OH, where he attended Walnut Hills High School (Class of 1949) where he proudly (and loudly!) played lead clarinet for the the Cecil Burtzehl Band.
He attended Williams College (Class of 1953) and was a member of the Chi Psi fraternity. While a Junior at Williams, he met Polly Bancroft who was attending Connecticut College. They married on September 2, 1954 in Polly’s hometown of St. Paul, MN and remained happily married until Polly’s death on December 4, 2016.
As newlyweds, they moved to La Jolla, CA where Chuck served active duty as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy. They returned to St. Paul, where they resided for fourteen years and raised their four children surrounded by Polly’s extended family. They attended the House of Hope Presbyterian Church, the same church where they were married. Chuck was an avid golf player at the Somerset Country Club. Later in life, he and Polly grew mint so they and their family could drink bootlegs and reminisce over their time in St. Paul and summer vacations at Hiawatha in Michigan’s UP.
Ever adventurous, Chuck and Polly moved their family to Hanover in 1970 where business opportunities in the Upper Valley allowed Chuck to pursue his career as an entrepreneur. He eventually started up and founded three companies, each of which were eventually sold to major corporations.
During those years, Chuck extensively travelled the world for business. He and Polly were actively involved in the Hanover community as members of the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College and Chuck was a long-time member of the Hanover Country Club and the X Club. Chuck served on numerous boards including DHMC, Kendal at Hanover and the Montshire Museum of Science and was named as NH Entrepreneur of the year in 1992.
Later in life, they divided their time between their summer home on Ticklenaked Pond in Ryegate, VT and their winter home on Palm Island in Englewood, FL where Chuck enjoyed many rounds of golf with his children and grandchildren at Lemon Bay Country Club. They were active travelers driving to visit their children and grandchildren or planning vacations for the family to enjoy. Chuck was ecstatic that he was able to now travel worldwide with Polly where they were often accompanied by Chuck’s older sister, Joan “Peewee” Haydock and enjoyed many great adventures.
They eventually moved to Kendal where Chuck actively engaged in many of the wonderful activities offered to the residents. The highlight of his week was his Monday evening happy hour and he loved his view of the garden. He continued to travel to visit family near and far but was always happy to get back “home” to Kendal. Chuck steadfastly remained a fan of the Red Sox and the Patriots and proudly bragged, rightfully so, that he was a champion of the Hebble Family Fantasy Football league. Throughout these last years, Chuck (or “Papa” as he was called by his ten grandchildren) enjoyed regular facetime conversations with family and friends worldwide. He loved to chat and always had a good story (or two) to share.
Chuck is survived by his four children: Mary Hebble Ryder and husband, David of Rosemont, PA, Charles M. Hebble III (“Charlie”) and his wife, Lou Ann of Estero, FL, John R. Hebble and his wife, Julie, of Sudbury, MA, and Thomas B. Hebble (“Tom”) and his wife, Kelly, of Naples, FL, his ten grandchildren: Jesse Ryder and his wife, Cait, Nicholas Ryder and his wife, Christina, Caitlin Hebble Crockett, and her fiancé Scott, Thomas Hebble and his wife, Rachel, Taylor Hebble and her partner, Jeffrey, Samuel Ryder, and his wife, Meredith, Patrick Hebble and his wife, Ella, Sara Hebble Portman and her fiancé, Nelson, Paige Hebble Carnahan and her husband, Spencer, and Emily Hebble and her partner, Sean. He is also survived by ten great grandchildren and was so happy to know that number 11 is on the way and due on Christmas Day! He also leaves his sister, Joan, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
There were many times people told Chuck that he looked like Johnny Carson. Whether that was the case, or not, we will always remember his twinkling blue eyes and his wonderful laugh. The family extends their deepest thanks and gratitude to the staff at both Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Kendal and especially to the staff at the Kendal Medical Center who graciously welcomed 21 of Chuck’s family members with open arms to be with him in his final hours. The comforting words of Senior Pastor, Amanda Lape-Freeberg and the expert care of the Medical Center staff made his final trip a peaceful one.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Chuck’s memory be made to Hope for Haiti via this dedicated link https://give.hopeforhaiti.com/chuckhebble, or via U.S. Mail:
