James H. Scott, 48, passed away at his home in Hanover on January 11, 2010. He was born December 5, 1961 in Little Rock, Arkansas the son of Cornelius Scott and Jessie Mae Keller. Jessie and James moved to Milwaukee, WI in the summer of 1962.
In 1980 he graduated from North Division High School in Milwaukee , WI and in 1992 he received his Bachelor of Science at UW Wisconsin of Madison, WI. In 1999 he received his PhD in Biological Sciences from UW Milwaukee of Milwaukee, WI.
His employment included the Summer Research Opportunity Program at UW Madison, WI Grad School, the Biological Sciences Great Lakes WATER Institute AOP Fellowship of UW Milwaukee, WI, NASA's Center of Life Detection at the JPL of Pasadena, CA' Staff Scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, DC and a Professor at the Dartmouth Department of Earth Sciences of Hanover, NH.
James always presented a very special smile, a unique and engaging view of the world, and a passion for his research, world politics, and all sports.
James research and teaching helped to expand the understanding of the remarkable ability of microbial communities to survive environmental extremes and, indeed, to shape the evolution of Earth. He discovered that microorganisms, as a community, are able to withstand tremendous pressure and changes in pressure. He was also a co-investigator on an upcoming NASA mission to Mars to search for compounds that form the building blocks of life, scheduled to fly next year. Ultimately, his work highlights the remarkable adaptability and resilience of life.
He had been featured on CCN.com, BBC News in England and by the Astrobiology Magazine.
He is survived by his mother, Jessie Mae Keller of Milwaukee, WI; his brother, Samuel E. Keller Sr. and his wife Estelle A. Keller; his brother Ervin L. Keller Sr.; his sister, Mary N. Keller; three nephews, Ervin L. Keller Jr., Samuel E. Keller Jr and Lamont E. Keller; and two nieces, Christina M. Wheeler and Desire D. Keller. (All of Milwaukee, WI)
A private family service will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery of Milwaukee WI next week.
Also, Dartmouth College Department of Sciences of Hanover, NH will have a memorial service later in the year where the broader personal, professional, and academia families will be invited to celebrate James' exceptional life.
