Edwin Chester Mead
August 3, 2010

Edwin Chester Mead (86) died Aug 3 rd at Harvest Hill after a short illness. He died peacefully while his daughters sang his favorite songs to him.

An Upper Valley resident since 1962, he was born in New York City and grew up in White Plains. After serving in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, Ed graduated from Yale University, married Virginia Bamford of White Plains, and worked in the New York area both in publishing and public relations, also in Pittsburgh as a management consultant. After moving to Hanover, he directed his own advertising and public relations firm until retiring in 1981.

A resident of Fairlee and later West Fairlee, VT from 1970 to 1992, Ed was active in town affairs, serving as a selectman, auditor and budget committee member.

He was a past president of the Lake Fairlee Assn., a director of the Smaller Business Assn. of New England, a member, until the early ‘80's, of the Hanover Rotary Club, a Dartmouth track official and past president, treasurer and volunteer at the Upper Valley Hostel.

Music, both instrumental and vocal, was always a part of Ed's life. He was an enthusiastic member of the University Chorus of the Upper Valley and Etna Baptist Church choir. Apart from these pleasant responsibilities, he also found plenty of time to enjoy the company of friends on the golf course and tennis court, and across a dining room or bridge table.

After a sudden illness took his beloved wife, Ginny, from him in 1994, Ed was lucky enough to find a second, wonderful and loving wife, Ruth Fitchet, in 1996. He is survived by Ruth; three daughters (Susan Mead of Hinesburg, VT, Shery Mead of Meriden NH, and Nancy Stoddard of Huntington VT; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Etna Baptist Church at 3PM Saturday August 7 th followed by a 5PM reception at the Hanover Inn. A second reception will be held at Harvest Hill (TBA).
