Carl Long
February 25, 2010

Carl Long, Dean of the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth from 1972-1984 who is considered to have ushered in the school's modern era, died of complications from Lewy Body Parkinson's Syndrome on February 25, 2010 at his home in Hanover, NH. He was 81 years old.

Prof. Long engineered Thayer School's transition from being subsidized by Dartmouth College to financial independence. He created an Annual Fund, greatly increased Thayer's endowment, expanded the school's size and scope and laid foundation for future expansion. His efforts provided his successors a financially stable engineering school with an integrated, design-oriented approach to curriculum and strong research programs.

Long's priorities as dean were to continue and expand faculty research as well as Thayer School's ties with the corporate world. He established the Cook Engineering Design Center, a partnership with industry that gave Thayer School students a bridge connecting their engineering studies to the outside world. Dean Long increased faculty research with several initiatives: Biomedical engineering projects in collaboration with Dartmouth Medical School and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center; materials science research to include ice engineering both in the new Ice Laboratory and in collaboration with the U.S. Army's CRREL; chemical process engineering that experimented with converting biomass into energy; and environmental fluid dynamics. In lieu of current events these initiatives undertaken a quarter-century ago seem all-the-more prescient today.

He was a professor of civil engineering at Thayer School when he took on the deanship, having joined the engineering faculty in 1954. Following his tenure as Dean he returned to teaching. His Engineering Science-21 course, where students were tasked to create engineering solutions to real-world social problems, was among the most popular in Thayer curriculum. He was named Dean Emeritus of the Thayer School in 1984 and continued to serve as director of the Cook Design Center that he founded. He retired in 1992.

Prof. Long was born on August 6, 1928 in Staten Island, New York. He attended MIT for his undergraduate work and Master's Degree. He received his doctorate in engineering from Yale. He was a National Science Foundation Science Faculty Fellow (1961-62) and in 1985 received the Robert Fletcher award, given annually in recognition of distinguished achievement and service in the highest tradition of the Thayer School. He was a member of several professional and advisory organizations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society for Engineering Education, and the US Patent and Trademark Office. He was a trustee of the Mount Washington Observatory, served on a number of corporate boards, and was active as a civil engineering consultant on building projects for Dartmouth College and others. He joined the Town of Hanover Planning Board in 1963, serving as chairman from 1966-74. From 1990 to 1996 he was president of the Hanover Water Works. Upon retirement he and his wife traveled abroad extensively. An enthusiastic golfer, gardener and cook, Prof. Long also indulged a passion for model building his entire life, from a 10 foot-long scale replica of the Bayonne Bridge undertaken as a child in Staten Island to assembling and finishing classic furniture kits at home in Hanover, NH.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Joanna Long; two children, Carl, Jr. of Bowie, Maryland and Barbara Anne of Arlington, Virginia and a sister, Anne Long of Charlestown, Massachusetts.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2010, from 5-7 PM at the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home on School Street in Hanover, NH.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 1, 2010, 11:00 AM in the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home with burial to follow at the Pine Knoll Cemetery of Hanover, NH.
