A wonderful man who knew how to manage and inspire the best of the young men and women he encountered. Lucky to be one of them.

Ralph was one of the real good guys at Dartmouth. He will be missed by so many. Back in the day he was Blunt daily. We all enjoyed his visits.

I had one bad semester in Hanover in the mid-1970s. The psych professor was teaching Walden II as if it should be a guide to living. I innocently asked how a society could put on a production of Othello if they had no knowledge of or experience with jealousy? I got a D. That same semester, I also pointed out to a Shakespeare professor that, while his favorite scene in one play was, indeed, brilliant, it was not a target that Will had been aiming for all along -- it was written so the leading lady-in-rags had a few minutes to change costumes and return as the gorgeous royal she was. I got a D. I was summoned to Ralph's office, explained what had happened and waited for my sentence. He quietly said, "As someone who had studied psychology, I don't put much stock in 'rats & mazes' either. Will you try to do better next semester?" I said yes. What a kind gesture! What a savvy man. The world could use more Ralph Manuals today. Glad I had a chance to know him.

As a student in the 70’s I had several interactions with Dean (of the College) Manuel during which he showed exceptional fairness, great leadership and a love for the College. He gave reasoned advice on how to resolve or prevent issues involving my peers in a manner that was principled yet caring. He set a fine example how a Dartmouth person should help others during difficult times. He also valued character as much as academic excellence. God bless this great man.
