retired journalist who spent 40 years with Scripps-Howard newspapers in Pittsburgh and Washington D.C., died November 29, 2017 in Hanover, New Hampshire, of natural causes. He was 87.
Eskey, a resident of Bethesda, MD, worked 14 years for The Pittsburgh Press and 26 years at Scripps Howard News Service in Washington as a copy editor, reporter, editorial writer, and columnist.
A graduate of The Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, he was president of The Pittsburgh Press Club and the Pittsburgh chapter of The Society of Professional Journalists. He was a member of The Hall of Fame at Brentwood High School, where he had been captain of the basketball team.
In Washington, he was chairman of the speakers committee at The National Press Club, where he helped to arrange 200 newsmaker luncheons in 1997, 1998, and 1999.
In Bethesda, he served as president of The Westbrook Elementary School PTA and was a member of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church and The Little Falls Swim and Tennis Club.
Eskey served for 20 months in The U.S. Navy during The Korean War.
Survivors include his two sons, Dr. Clifford Joseph Eskey, of Hanover, NH, and Matthew Eskey of Austin, TX, and three grandchildren.
