Joanne L. Sailer
October 2, 2017

Joanne L. Sailer, 75, of Lyme Center, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Monday, October 2nd. Her journey to Heaven began with a stunningly beautiful dawn rising over the New England countryside that she so loved.

Joanne was born April 19, 1942 in Washington, D.C. Her childhood years included stops in New Orleans and North Carolina and she settled in for high school in Bergen County, New Jersey. There she very much embraced what would become life-long passions for both physical activity and service to others.

In 1960 Joanne followed the service calling and entered nursing school at Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing in Hanover, NH. She eagerly embraced the north country lifestyle and in 1961 briefly dated some guy named “Eric”. More on that later. Life then led Joanne through various chapters as a Navy spouse with many stops including Florida, Texas, Mississippi, California, Maryland and again to California. Everywhere she went Joanne made many lifelong friends and continued to embrace her calling to serve others through working as a nurse, volunteering and raising children. She also developed a great tennis game with a wicked lob that would foil many a friendly foe. More importantly, tennis would serve as a wonderful catalyst for developing friendships that would sustain for the remainder of her life.

In 1995 the next and best chapter of her life began when she reunited with “that guy named Eric” through a magical small-world connection. Joanne relocated to Lyme Center, NH in 1996 and she and Eric were married on May 2, 1997. These 21 years were the best of times, filled with love, laughter and adventure. She and Eric traveled the world, skied with the Over the Hill Ski Gang, hiked, climbed, walked across England and occasionally even relaxed. Summers were spent at the beloved Goose Pond, fall was spent in Ocean City, NJ and mixed all in between were visits to kids, grandkids and entertaining wonderful friends. Joanne cherished all these years spent with the love of her life, Eric Sailer.

Joanne is survived by husband Eric, sons Bruce Crawford & Steve Crawford (Lisa), stepsons Chris Sailer (Carolyn), Jay Sailer (Jane) and Brian Sailer (Anna Belle), step-daughters Gretchen & Kate (Steve). She is also survived by grandchildren Stanley, Amelia, Noah, Grace, Peter, Joey, Morgan, Lilly, Lukas, Max & Hailey, her sister Janice Patterson and brothers Tom Pitt and Bill Pitt.

Joanne Sailer was a wonderful, caring woman who was ever the gracious host. She will be missed but hers was indeed a life well-lived. We would like to thank Cathy and Susan of Bayada Hospice for their caring and compassionate end-of-life care as well as the cancer team at DHMC.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 11th at 10:00 a.m. at the Lyme Congregational Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital.
