Frederick Matthew Daley, Jr.,
of Hanover, NH passed away Thursday, August 31, 2017 of natural causes. He was 95.
He was born in Waterbury, CT on August 17, 1922 to Gertrude Horan Daley and Frederick Matthew Daley, Sr. He grew up in New Haven, Derby, and Shelton, CT, and attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School. He graduated from Cheshire Academy; at graduation, he was honored with the Sheriff Award for being the model Scholar, Athlete and Gentleman. He entered Dartmouth College, Class of 1944, which was interrupted by WWII. During the war he was a Radar Specialist with the US Navy.
He returned to Dartmouth College and Tuck Graduate School of Business, class of 1947. His association with Dartmouth was always intense and meaningful. He was a member of Sphinx, Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and the Dartmouth track team, and qualified for the US Olympic track team. He was a world class sprinter earning the nickname The Flyer. The class never had a formal graduation until their 50th Reunion year in 1994. This meant so much to all the members of his class.
He married Gertrude Stigberg in October 1948; a marriage that lasted 68 years. He went to work for Sponge Rubber Products in Shelton, and as President and General manager of the plant for five years, built a subsidiary division in Waterville, Quebec.
After the sale of the company to BF Goodrich, he left the corporate world and settled in Plainfield, NH; raising and breeding Arabian horses and Welsh ponies. He moved to Hanover in 1961. He was the owner of radio station WNHV, and the Dominion Snath Co of Canada; which was relocated to Plainfield in the 1960's.
The great joy of his life was the family summer house at Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester, MA, where he spent every summer of his life. The family and relatives of six Daley families are there spanning six generations.
He loved nature, the four seasons, birds and gardening. For 3 winters he maintained a regulation hockey rink in his back field for the high school team to use for practice.
He was predeceased by his parents, and sister Doris Herron. He leaves his three sons, Frederick (Leigh) of Exeter, NH; Geoffrey of Havre de Grace, MD, and Richard (Martina) of Hanover, NH; two daughters, Deborah (George) Roussos of Concord, NH, and Kathleen (Richard) Olmstead of New London, NH; sister Mary Alice Wheeler of Venice, FL; and his beloved grandchildren, Nicholas (Nicole), Katherine, and Alexander (Mackenzie) Roussos; Frederick IV, Evan, and Nolan Daley; Emily (Joshua) Serrin, William (Alexandra), Peter and Ingrid Olmstead; Lillian, Eileen, and Patrick Daley, and 9 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at the Parish of St. Denis Roman Catholic Church at 2:00pm on Saturday, September 2, 2017. Burial to follow at Pine Knolls Cemetery Hanover, NH.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hanover Improvement Society, 57 South Main St, Hanover, NH.
