Roger Whitney Morse,
77, passed away on July 5, 2017 at The Lebanon Center-Genesis after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
He was born February 17, 1940 in Hanover, NH to Bernard E and Vena (Whitney) Morse of Hanover. Roger graduated from Hanover High School in 1958 and attended Franklin Pierce College in Concord, NH. He married Grace Brown of Danville, VT in August of 1961.
In 1960, he started his career at Dartmouth College working in the Alumni Records department. Five years later, he began working in the Earth Sciences department as a Technical Administrator and remained there until his retirement in 2002. One of his favorite duties was participating in the department’s off-campus program called ‘The Stretch’. He was most active being the cook on the Lake Powell segment. These trips allowed him to get to know the undergraduate students majoring in Earth Sciences and he often assisted many of them with securing funding for their senior research projects.
Roger was a wonderful and loving son, husband, brother, and father, as well as a mentor and friend to the many students and people whose lives he touched. He had a great sense of humor. He and Grace enjoyed traveling, dancing, camping, and going to plays, concerts, and films. Roger loved horseback riding and was an excellent gardener growing a variety of roses. He was also very artistic and created many scenic oil paintings, was always decorating a room, refinishing and upholstering furniture, making drapes, caning chairs, and collecting antiques. He was a great, and appreciated, writer of poems for his friends. Always on the move until Alzheimer’s stopped him when he gradually drifted into his own quiet space.
Roger is survived by his wife Grace; son Dana Whitney Morse and wife Liza of Lebanon, Maine; daughter Darcy Elizabeth (Morse) Emerson and husband Jason of Lebanon, NH; niece Katrina Teeter who lived with the family for several years while growing up; five grandchildren, Matthew Morse of Lebanon, NH, Ashley Morse of Sanford, ME, Emily Morse of Lincoln, NH, and Sophia and Olivia Emerson of Lebanon, NH; three great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Raegan, and Sadie; his brother Robert Morse; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and lifelong friends Allan and Carol Campbell. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Andrew Morse, and nephew Craig Morse.
Services will be held July 22nd at 11:00am at the West Lebanon Congregational Church, 18 Maple Street in West Lebanon, NH. A committal at the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery will immediately follow. Family and friends are invited back to the church for refreshments.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Roger and Grace Morse Fund at Dartmouth College (checks should be payable to Department of Earth Sciences and mailed to 6105 Fairchild Hall, Hanover NH 03755 – specify Morse Fund); or to the West Lebanon Congregational Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, NH.
