Annette Mellott Davies Brissenden,
85, passed away June 16, 2017 at Kendal of Hanover. Annette was deeply loved by her family and many circles of friends she formed at every stage of her life.
Born January 28, 1932 in Blue Island, Illinois to Irving and Halo Mellott, Annette spent her early childhood as a minister’s daughter living in inner city Chicago. Following her father’s illness and untimely death when she was 8 years old, and the difficult period that followed, her mother landed a teaching position at Choate School in Brookline, MA. Together, Annette and her mother moved east to start a new life.
Annette thrived in the new opportunities she received as a year-round resident and Choate student. From there, she went on to graduate from Wellesley College in 1952 with a major in French and earned her master’s degree in French from Middlebury College. Annette spent a year with her “French family” studying in Paris as a Fulbright Scholar; a time she would fondly remember all her life. Annette then returned to teach French at Vassar College.
In 1955 Annette married Frederick M. Davies, M.D. They remained in Wellesley, close to her alma mater, to raise their three children. In addition to being a wife and mother, Annette was a very active volunteer – in alumnae affairs at Wellesley College, working with the Wellesley Service League and with The League of Women Voters. She was also a member of the Unitarian Society of Wellesley Hills and sang in its choir for many years. She loved music and played the piano all her life.
In 1978, she and her family moved to Etna, NH primarily for Fred’s career at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital. Once in the area, however, Annette began to focus on work of her own and soon became the Program Coordinator for the New Hampshire Perinatal Program, based at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Annette greatly enjoyed the work setting where she helped organize perinatal outreach education programs for physicians and nurses. Perhaps equally important, she found many kindred spirits there who remained very special to her over the years.
Following Fred’s death in 2002, Annette moved to Kendal at Hanover, a continuing care retirement community. There, she returned to the familiar life in community that harkened back to her school years. It was at Kendal that Annette met Hoke Brissenden. The two were married in 2006, and gave each other much happiness in these later years. Hoke passed away in 2013.
Those who knew Annette, knew her ability to put a smile on anyone’s face and make others feel special and loved. Her kindness and compassion toward others were traits that stayed with her even through the final years of her life.
Annette leaves behind her children William Mellott Davies of Portland, OR, Kathryn Davies Schmidt of Florence, MA and Jonathan Hale Davies of Marblehead, MA, her grandchildren Ellyn Schmidt, Robert Schmidt, Hale Davies, Chase Davies, June Davies, Gigi Davies and Ethan Davies.
The family is tremendously grateful for the loving, professional care provided by each member of the Whittier Assisted Living team at Kendal of Hanover. They were Annette’s last special community and they helped her daily with such kindness during her struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
A celebration of Annette’s life will be scheduled at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to The Wellesley Students' Aid Society, Wellesley College, 106 Central St. Schneider 117, Wellesley, MA 02481 or to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, either online at http://curealz.org/in-memory/annette-davies-brissenden or by mail to 34 Washington St., Suite 200, Wellesley Hills, MA 02481.
