Loren Charles Spademan, Jr. passed away peacefully at home in the comfort of his family on February 11th, 2010, from complications of Alzheimer's disease.
Mr. Spademan was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 26th, 1926, to Dr. Loren C. Spademan and Zeta Reitzel Spademan. The Spademan family moved to Highland Park, Michigan, where Loren graduated from high school in 1944.
For a short time he attended MIT and Dartmouth College on the V-12 program and was later stationed at Navy Pier in Chicago. After being discharged from the Navy he returned to Dartmouth, graduating with the class of 1948 and from Tuck School of Business in 1949.
In 1954 he married Susan Speed Hubbard at Christ Church, Cranbrook, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. They made their home and raised their family in the northern suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, and Toledo, Ohio.
For 30 years Mr. Spademan worked for the J. L. Hudson Co. in Detroit and Toledo in merchandising, operations and management ending his career with Hudson's as the General Manager of the Toledo store. He left Hudson's to pursue an interest in Art in Public Places. The Spademans traveled throughout the U.S. in their motor home photographing public art and giving lectures and slide presentations to art oriented groups in each city they visited. He was a member of the Toledo Modern Art Group and Chairman of the Toledo Arts Commission.
After the Spademans moved to Norwich, Vermont, in 1981 to be closer to their children who had settled in the East, they purchased a real estate company in Quechee, Vermont, marketing for sale and rental vacation properties, establishing Carefree Quechee Vacations and Coldwell Banker Spademan Associates. They retired from both companies about eight years ago and have traveled widely since then.
Loren enjoyed his family, music, theatre, art, travel, woodworking, working around his house and grounds, and tinkering. He was a thoughtful and gentle man in every sense of the word. Alzheimer's took its toll on his intellect, but his sweetness and humor remained to the end.
Mr. Spademan is survived by Susan, his wife of 56 years, son L. Charles Spademan III and his partner Kate Reed of Montclair, NJ, son William Wagner Spademan and his wife Mary Link of Ashfield, MA, daughter Sarah Chivers Spademan and her husband Daniel Selig of Cambridge, MA, brother Charles Frederick Spademan or Troy, MI, brother Dr. Richard George Spademan of Truckee, CA, sister Ann Virginia Liverance of Ft. Pierce, FL, grandchildren William Fabrizio Spademan, Sarah Emily Spademan Link, Frances Thorn Spademan and Gabriel Loren Selig, and many cherished cousins, nieces and nephews.
A gathering of remembrance will be planned at the convenience of Mr. Spademan's family. The family suggests that contributions in his name could be made to The Haven, Partners in Health, or the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of NH.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, NH.
