Eleanor “Jakie” Murtagh, long time resident of Hanover, died at Mercy Retirement in Oakland, California on January 21 st , at age 100. She was born Eleanor Jacot, the youngest of five children of Louis Ophir Jacot and Jane Walsh Jacot of Revere, Mass. in 1909.
She received her B.A. and M.S.W. from Simmons College in Boston, and went on to practice social work at New Haven Hospital until her marriage to Dr. John Murtagh in 1938. They settled in Hanover and lived many years at 8 Rip Road, where they raised their two daughters, Jane and Mary. Dr. Murtagh practiced medicine as Chief of Otolaryngology at the Hitchcock clinic, and was Professor of Otolaryngology at Dartmouth Medical School. Following Dr. Murtagh's retirement from medicine in 1970, they moved to Ft. Lauderdale. During their many happy years in Hanover, Jakie Murtagh was active in the Dartmouth Players, where she appeared in 14 productions between 1940 and 1957, including Wonderful Town, Arsenic and Old Lace and Rags to Riches. She received consistently enthusiastic reviews in the Valley News and the Dartmouth , praising her singing and comedic acting skills. The Murtaghs had a wide social circle and loved to travel and entertain. After moving to Fort Lauderdale, they continued to visit the Upper Valley for many years until Dr. Murtagh's death in 1986. In 1990 she moved back to Hanover and lived at the Greens. Mrs. Murtagh relocated to California in 2004 to be close to her daughter and her family. She is survived, and greatly missed, by her daughter Mary Murtagh, her son-in-law Fredric Jacobson, and her grandsons Adam and Aaron Jacobson of Berkeley, California.
A Graveside service will be held in July at the Pine Knoll Cemetery in Hanover, NH with the date to be announced later.
