Martha Peters Mitchell age 84 died October 6, 2010 at Kendal at Hanover.
Martha was born in Passaic, New Jersey on February 15, 1926 and grew up in Chatham, New Jersey, graduating as valedictorian from Chatham High School in 1944. In 1948 she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in design (summa cum laude) from the college of fine arts, Syracuse University.
Following graduation she worked for 14 years as an artist in the advertising department of Hahne & Co., a Newark, New Jersey department store.
A life-long reader of the National Geographic magazine, she became an avid traveler starting with trips in the USA and Canada and then to pre-jet Europe aboard the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth.
In 1962 Martha married Howard M. Mitchell of Amherst, Massachusetts, then living in St. Louis, Missouri. While in St. Louis she volunteered at the Children's and Shriners Hospitals.
When Howard retired from Monsanto Company in 1979, they moved back east and built a home in Hancock, New Hampshire where they enjoyed many outdoor activities including gardening, hiking, bicycling, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Martha was a member of the Hancock Women's Club and the Hancock Historical Society. She also volunteered for the Monadnock Community Hospital, the Hancock Town Library and Church World Service of the Hancock Congregational Church. For over 20 years the Mitchells traveled widely, Alaska, the Caribbean, Scandinavia, British Isles, most of Europe, Turkey, the Soviet Union, Australia, New Zealand and China.
In 2002 they moved to Kendal at Hanover in Hanover, New Hampshire. Over the years Martha continued her interest in art, working in watercolor, pen and ink and later pastels.
