To the family of Dr. Geurkink:
Over 10 years ago, Dr. Geurkink treated my father-in-law who was dying of throat cancer. I will never forgot Dr. Geurkink's kindness, gentle compassion, and honesty. He was a lovely man who made a deep impression on me and my husband. Please accept my sincere sympathy for your loss.
Dena Romero (Hanover, N.H.)

I just read with sadness of Dr. Guerkink's death. With his surgical skills, he changed my life for the better in 1992 enabling me to breathe through my nose for the first time in my life which had the added benefits of erasing all allergies I had. He refused to assume any credit for ending my allergies but I alway gave him full credit. Whenever I saw him afterwards, I thinked him for what he achieved with this patient. He was a quiet and very diginified man and physician.

Kate - I remember you and Nate at RVC and always loved seeing you.
I am so sorry for your loss of a good man with a great smile (and headband) My thoughts are with you,
Judy McKeown (West Lebanon)

My thoughts, on the passing of Nate Geurkink:
Nate and my sister Kate's marriage was a blessing for me. On the one hand, Kate, a wonderfully altruistic and kind-hearted person herself, was able to find such a kindred spirit in Nate, who had so many similar, endearing qualities. On the other hand, their marriage brought Nate into my life as a brother-in-law,and I was able to enjoy many years of friendship with one of the most remarkable persons I've ever known. An athletic and powerful man, he was as unpretentious, humble, and gentle as could be. His good nature and natural sense of humor always enlivened the room, as did his wonderful knack for story-telling. His intellectual curiosity and broad range of interests were always inspiring. His skill and dedication to his profession and patients were admirable. I will miss him, as we all will.
Thomas Glynn, MD (Richmond, IN)

Dear Kate,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time.
With Love,
Phoebe Schwarz (Lebanon, NH)

As a Clerk at Western Tool Supply in Lebanon, I had the pleasure of talking with Nate about our woodworking hobbies. His visits were always enjoyable as well as educational. I will remember his wit and sense of humor.

Kate, I just read with deep sadness the passing of Dr. Geurkink. So many memories. They bring smiles to our faces, tears to our eyes, and sometimes both at the same time. Losing a loved one is devastating, but we have all been left with a special gift - our memories. They are often the only things we have left after that special person is gone. Though at times they may be painful to think about, with them, our loved ones remain a part of us forever. Please accept our deepest sympathy for your loss.
Sue and Bob Burbank (Friend and Colleague) (Lebanon, NH)

Kate, I am thankful that together with Nate you shared so many years of joy and happiness. As so many others have expressed, he was an incredibly special human being, blessed most of all with a peaceful and kind heart. Ali and I are deeply sorry for your tremendous loss and send all our love.

I almost inderstand,
I almost recognize as a friend
the great impertinence of beauty
that comes even to the dying,
even to the fallen, without reason
sweetening the air.
W. Berry

Thanks Nate, for the sharing. We will miss you.

nate was such a big 'love' of a guy with such a warm and wonderful heart and mind. with his medicine, he did so much for so many. needless to say, he touched many lives, and especially ours! we were so lucky to have known him and he made our kate so very happy."at the end of the day, the mysticism of it - living, not living - becomes a mystery. and i don't think we are ever privileged except on death's doorstep to actually understand it" safe travels, dear nate ... we miss and love you!

Cousin Kate,
I am so sorry for your loss and wish I could be there to give you a big hug. You had such a wonderful life with Nate....and you have so many wonderful memories. For that, you are a lucky lady :)

I am honored to have known Nate, albeit for a relatively short period of time. His kindness and gentle nature is inspiring. His love for Kate is uplifting. I will miss him dearly.

I stumbled across this obit by accident and because of the photograph (it was the bow tie) I read the obit. What a wonderful written tribute which could have been 1,000 pages and it would have STILL not have been long enough to even begin to tell the world what an amazing man the Good Doctor was. I am sorry that I was not one of his honoured friends where I could say that I knew him. My condolences to the family. He must have been a wonderful person. If I invaded on your privacy, please forgive me. I have never written a note to someone I never knew like this. I just could not resist the calling to acknowledge his short lived presence on this Hard Rock.

My earliest memories of Uncle Nate were this: a broad-shouldered, strong man, with thick wavy hair and a calm, soothing voice. I loved his hugs, his smiles and most of all, his stories! We treasured each time he came back home to visit, especially the time he brought Aunt Kate to meet us. Aunt Kate you brought him so much happiness and we were all so ecstatic he'd found you! You brought a twinkle to his eye and skip to his step; and we gained a cool aunt. Heaven now gets to hear him say Hello, this is Dr. Nathan Geurkink.
We'll all miss him.
Marty and I love you, Kate!
Joni and Marty Rose (Dallas, Texas)

I will always remeber Nate, as so many did, a man of stature and a big heart, a very intelligent, inquisitive man with an even temperment, a kind countenance and a deep chuckle-laugh. One who appreceiated cross-words, poetry and a good conversation. A man of depth and humble despite his honors and achievements.

I know he was your great love Kate, and you his. What a gift that you found each other eventually and had twenty treasured years together. My deepest sympathy for your loss.
Love to my dearest friend,
Muffy
Rosemary Avery (Granby, CT)

My Friend Kate, I am so very sorry to hear about your dear and wonderful Nate. I remember you calling him "my gentle giant" with a great big smile on your face! I know you will find comfort in all your magical memories and the unique true love you two shared together, and shared with all of us at one time or another. May God be in your heart and by your side in comfort.
Love,
Darlene (Hampton Falls, New Hampshire)

For those of us who knew and loved Nate, we are the ones who are truely blessed. His caring, kindness, and patience were only part of his hallmark traits in the OR. His Okalahoma stories will long live on in the memories of his OR friends. Even though I never got the footpedal in the precise spot, his kindness was always in the precise spot. To Kate and family, my deepest sympathies on your loss.
Love you Nate.
Linda D. Thompson RN (Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Opeating Rm, Lebanon, NH)

Nate was such a gift to so many people. I feel incredibly lucky to have known his spirit and kindness. I send my deepest condolences to his family. Kate, you have been in my heart and thoughts. I send you tons of love and look forward to being with you soon.

Kate--my dear friend,
2 cardinals flew together past me last eve and somehow I wondered if things really were "OK" with you and Nate. So I googled and immmediately saw the notice of his passing. I am so very sorry for your loss--I loved being part of the early days of yours and Nate's love and watching you grow in love together and share so much of that love with those of us privileged to have shared your space. Know how very much he impacted so many and I pray for peace in the days ahead for you.
Love you always,
Regina McCarthy (Chapel Hill, North Carolina)
