Donald W. Barr, 85, passed away Monday January 11 th at home surrounded by family and his faithful dog Molly. Donald was the son of Donald L. and Helen (Murphy) Barr. He was born September 8, 1924 in Binghamton, NY and moved to Hanover, NH at age 14. He attended Hanover High School, class of “42” then graduated from Dartmouth College with the class of 1946.
He served in the United States Army in the 82 nd Airborne Division during World War II as a paratrooper and medic. He was a Purple Heart recipient.
While working in Providence, RI at Rhode Island Hospital Trust for 30 years, he obtained his law degree from Boston College in 1953 and banking degree in Trust at Rutgers University in 1966.
He was a past board member of the Child Guidance Clinic of Providence, RI; former Treasurer of Dartmouth Alumni of Rhode Island for 12 years; was the past President and Treasurer of the Narragansett Bay Yachting Assoc. for 15 years and was past President and Treasurer and Commodore for many years of the Coles River Yacht Club in Touisset, MA.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed skiing, skating and playing hockey, sailing and later in life, golfing. He even participated in the “Marion to Bermuda Cruising Yacht Race”, two times.
He is survived by his loving wife Ann of 49 years of Hanover, NH; his daughter Elizabeth Barr and her husband Marvin Ramirez of West Greenwich, RI; his daughter Jennifer Kenyon of Swansea, MA and his two grandchildren Jake and Mitchell Kenyon; his brother John P. Wood and his wife June of Venice, FL; two cousins, Peggy Ann Anderson of Weston, CT and Barbara Benisch of Forest Hills, NY and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son Jonathan and his sister, Helen Cafasso of Cambridge, MA.
There will be no calling hours and graveside services will be held at a later date to be announced with military honors. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, 406 West 34 th St., Kansas City, MO 64111.
